Our research suggests that nature plays a vital role in child development. Exposure to green spaces promotes cognitive restoration, enhancing children’s readiness to learn. Unlike structured environments, nature provides an open canvas for imaginative play. A simple stick transforms into a magical tool, and a fluttering butterfly becomes a fantastical creature. Studies (e.g., “Nature and children’s health,” “Socially innovative preschool facilities,” “Landscapes for play”) show that free play, particularly in natural settings, fosters self-expression, creativity, and motor skills.
Problem statement:
Building on these findings, we propose a design that sparks a love for nature and fosters social interaction. This space will be an invitation, not a dictation, encouraging children to explore and connect with natural elements and each other.

Our design, Petals prioritizes exploration within the natural environment while fostering social interaction. Its multi-level design allows for a delightful variety of uses, transforming from seats and tables to imaginative obstacle courses and beyond. Unburdened by prescribed functions, Petals becomes a canvas for children’s creativity, inviting them to invent their own playful narratives.

Defining “nature” is crucial. Forests and mountains are iconic, but is a neglected schoolyard corner any less natural?
We propose a broader definition: nature as anything organic, anywhere. When placed in the forgotten corners of the schoolyard this versatile design transforms overlooked spaces into vibrant oases for exploration.
